Are My Dues Going Up?

Now that we know OPEIU, Local 30 Members who work at Kaiser Permanente have secured a new, two year contact, some Members are asking, "When we get [the two, 3%] raises, will our dues go up?" The answer is, "Maybe". To know for sure, you'll need to multiple your current wage by 3% (i.e. $20 hourly wage x .03 = $0.60) Next, add that number to your hourly wage to equal your new, hourly wage (i.e. $20 + .60 = $20.60) Then do it again for the following year (i.e. $20.60 hourly wage x .03 = $0.618 and $20.60 + $0.618 = $21.218). Lastly, confirm where your new hourly totals, for each year, fall into our OPEIU, Local 30 dues schedule.

Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

Recently, I needed to utilize the California Employees Sick Leave Act (CESLA) which allows for workers to use up to half of their annual accrual of sick leave to care for their dependents, while protecting the Worker from any retailiation or punishment from Management. Unfortunately, the Assistant Department Administrator within the department I work didn't understand this. Fortunately, OPEIU, Local 30 Union Reps. Mark Bailey and Annette Baxter did and contacted Management without hesitation. Should Management choose to harass Workers whom need to utilize CESLA, they should expect a grievance shortly thereafter. If you experience a similar violation of State law, now you know who to call...I know I do. Thank You, Annette and Mark (more...)

Regarding a separate issue, MaryEllen Farell proved to be quite supportive in regards to OPEIU, Local 30 Member's rights as they pertain to work shift changes; where Management has established that Workers didn't/don't bid on specific work areas or assignments and, instead, bid only on shifts, Workers may contend that changes in regards to shift changes must then be done in reverse seniority (if no senior worker chooses to accept the shift changes). Thank You, MaryEllen.

Why should YOU join the OPEIU?

If you're not already a Member of our Union, why should you join? For starters, money- Union members earn better wages and benefits than workers who aren't Union Members. On average, Union Workers' wages are 30% higher than their nonunion counterparts. While only 14% of nonunion workers have guaranteed pensions, 68% of union workers do. More than 97% of union workers have jobs that provide health insurance benefits! Unions also help employers create a more stable, productive workforce where Workers have a say in improving their jobs. Want to know more? KP/CSC & OPEIU, Local 30 Contract Ratification Meetings (flyer)

Terms of the tentative local and national contracts will be presented July 1st, 2010 from 12pm - 2pm and 5pm - 7pm (CSC Meetings June 29, 2010 from 10:30am - 2:30pm and 4pm - 7pm)at the Holiday Inn Mission Valley Stadium, Conference Room 1, 3805 Murphy Canyon Rd., San Diego, CA 92123. During each of these meetings, the contract offer which has been unanimously endorsed by the OPEIU, Local 30 Bargaining Committee, will be presented and explained. Union staff will be available to answer questions during the meetings. Voting will be allowed at any time during the meetings. "Although these two-year contracts may not be anyone's "ideal" agreements, I believe they may be the best terms we could expect given present bargaining conditions. This agreement will maintain our same level of health insurance, with no premiums and low co-pays. We will also benefit from 3% pay increases during each of the two years of the agreement. If the membership of our Union make the effort to be involved by casting their vote on July 1st, 2010, we'll be in a stronger position to bargain for improvements, during the next contract negotiations, two years from now." -Dustin Teske

Tentative National Agreement Reached @ KP

After months of bargaining for a new national agreement at Kaiser Permanente, the 121-person, member-led SEIU-UHW bargaining team announced a tentative agreement on a new two-year national agreement that upholds the high standards for the 48,000 (SEIU-UHW) members throughout Kaiser. The agreement provides for 3% (across the board) raises per year, protects job security and maintains all existing healthcare benefits.

"Everybody was heard," said Walter Allen of OPEIU, Local 30. "There were a lot of examples of where we could do better, and a lot of good ideas about how to do better in Partnership."

"With this agreement, Kaiser continues to set the standard - whether in providing quality healthcare to the community or offering pay and benefits that keep experienced staff and define Kaiser as one of the best employers anywhere," said Larry Coleman, a nuclear medicine technologist at Kaiser Roseville Medical Center and a bargaining committee member.

Entering negotiations, Kaiser sought takeaways on employee healthcare benefits. Earlier this year, managers and non-union employees were required to pay increased deductibles and fees for their health insurance. In response, SEIU-UHW Kaiser members across the state stickered up, purpled up, rallied and picketed to ensure that all their benefits would be maintained. The agreement met all three goals the bargaining team set out to achieve: win raises for everyone, protect all benefits, and protect long-term job security!

"We won every one of our bargaining goals. How? Solidarity," said Wendy McGee from Kaiser Orange County. "I've never seen unity like this before. We showed how incredible things happen when we stand together as brothers and sisters." (...more)

Time to Negotiate

Negotiations of a new, National Agreement have begun. Following, the OPEIU, Local 30 negotiating committee and Kaiser will begin negotiating a new, local contract. As during previous negotiations, the CFO of our Union had scheduled "Pre-Negotiation Town Hall Meetings". However, I think these meetings aren't much more than window dressings; the same issues have been brought to the attention of the Union for the past thirty plus years (i.e. wage disparity between workers in San Diego & Los Angeles, Employer over-use of subcontracting our jobs, Day after Thanksgiving to be treated as a holiday, etc.) yet every contract lacks progress in these areas. If progress regarding issues which are important to us isn't made this time, I encourage my fellow Union Members to join me in voting no on the tentative agreement. (more...) [comment]

The Sincerest Form of Flattery

It's been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So, I suppose I should feel complimented, then, by the ways in which OPEIU, Local 30 staff have copied us; in 2005, I launched the first interactive web site dedicated to providing accurate and timely information for Members of OPEIU, Local 30 (OPEIU, Local 30 staff technically did have a web site first, however, it contained information which was 5 years [or more] outdated and was rarely updated. Beginning in 2006, OPEIU, Local 30 staff created a new site...and then, later, another new site. Neither are updated in a timely fashion but, hey, it's a start.) Then in August of 2008, during the election of officers, my fellow running mates and I broke new ground by becoming the first candidates to campaign in a serious manner by mailing to every Member's home our candidacy information (several weeks later, OPEIU, Local 30 staff mailed out their candidacy information). In late 2009, I created the OPEIUVoice FACEBOOK account in an effort to create even better access to information for OPEIU, Local 30 Members (in February of 2010, OPEIU, Local 30 made an account as well). The person/people treading where we've already paved truly deserve your "New Strengths, New Directions" award, thanks OPEIU, Local 30 Staff..or perhaps more fitting, "you're welcome".

OPEIU is Moving has Moved

In January of this year, OPEIU, Local 30 Secretary Treasurer Walter Allen Jr. and the Executive Board chose to purchase the building located at 6136 Mission Gorge Road, San Diego, CA 92120. This is a 16,701 square foot, two-story building which was built in 1972. The purchase price is $1,857,500. A portion of the loan will be financed (interest-free) via the International OPEIU and principle will be paid by the OPEIU, Local 30 Membership. Move-in occured during early April.

Kaiser Workers Leave SEIU & Join NUHW
In a stunning rebuke to SEIU, nurses and health care professionals at Kaiser Hospital voted overwhelmingly yesterday to leave SEIU and join NUHW. Nurses favored NUHW over SEIU 746-36 (95%), one health professional unit went for NUHW 189-26 (86%), and the other went for NUHW 717-192 (78%). The landslide victories likely foreshadow the complete shift of SEIUs Kaiser workforce to NUHW when the rest of the bargaining units vote in June. Communicating Stewards & Their Hypocritical Union
As a Union Steward, I received my copy of the OPEIU Steward Update (Volume 6, Issue 3) today and thought, "How interesting". I confess, I don't often read all the articles, in fact, I often only read the headlines and skim through some of the articles looking for something interesting which grabs my attention and entices me to read further and, although the articles within the Steward Update tend not to peak my interest very often, this latest issue, is an exception; "A new Look at Stewards and Communications" and "Jobs of the Steward: a Quick Quiz". Both of these articles promote Union Stewards informing fellow Members in regards political issues which are relative to working people; And both of these articles encourage Union Stewards to initiate and engage Members in conversations in regards to these political and legislative issues. "Stewards should...pull together scattered, and sometimes quarelling, members by setting up their own effective communications network, using some of the new technology that's so popular," states 'A New Look at Stewards and Communications. SEIU DID, after Walter said OPEIU COULDN'T
In mid 2005, having friends who work as Security Officers within Kaiser Permanente bulidings and knowing they didn't have a Union, I began my effort to help them organize. Instinctively, I contacted our Union, OPEIU, Local 30, and was told, by Walter Allen, that we could not represent them. I then contacted the SPFPA, received and distributed their information and authorization cards but, due to poor communications and little support by their representative, this effort dissolved. I then contacted the UGSOA, received and distributed their information and authorization cards. We had sufficient cards signed for the UGSOA to file for an NLRB election, which they did. However, we then learned of the massive effort the SEIU was making (focused in L.A. and Northern California) and the UGSOA opted to withrawal their election petition so that the Officers may all be organized within one Union. I had an excellent experience, working with the UGSOA. I then contacted the SEIU, received and distributed their information and authorization cards (and I personally returned cards from more than 95% of the Officers working in San Diego). I also had an excellent experience working with the SEIU, during this organizing drive. Result...

Kaiser Lab Workers Prepare for Re-Alignment
On February 26, 2010 Kaiser Permanente lab workers who are Members of OPEIU, Local 30 will be experiencing yet another re-alignment. Perhaps time flies but it really doesn't seem that long ago that these Members endured this same stressful situation. This time workers are upset and are making their voices and dissatisfaction heard by filing a grievance with our Union. Copies of the grievance may be obtained from fellow coworkers and/or by contacting us The driving factor behind this grievance is due to a change which Management is intending to make in regards to bidding senority; Management has stated it's intent of permitting all of a Worker's senority 'count' during job bidding. Workers are contending that only one's senority within their classification should be used and are citing page 16, article 8, section 4, paragraph 821. If you'd like to add your support of this grievance, you may print, sign and fax a copy to the OPEIU, Local 30 office (619) 640-4830.
It's important to prepare for a dialogue between the OPEIU, Local 30 Members, their Union and Kaiser Permanente Management in order to best understand each position. Discussing your concerns with your coworkers in person or on this site may prove very helpful. Pro OPEIU, Local 30 Member/ Kaiser Permanente Worker's perspective and/or pro Kaiser Permanente Management perspective may be posted in our forums, [here].

* Update - KP Management has reversed it's decision to base Worker's bidding position on his/her bargaining unit seniority and has released a memo stating bidding order will be based on one's seniority within the classification.

MaryEllen Farrell Banks Over $100k
While our union dues increased again and many of us "eeked" out a less than $800 per year raise last year, Mary Ellen joined the over $100,000 Club when she landed a nearly $7,500 raise in her base salary. Including allowances and disbursements, Miss Farrell banked a grand total of $101,148 (all paid from our dues). Yet her raise may seem modest compared to Walter Allen's base salary raise of $12,897. Including allowances and dispersements, Mr Allen banked a grand total of $166,668 (all paid from our dues).
We invite you to congratulate or complain to Miss Farrell and Mr Allen regarding their newly acquired wealth. Or, better yet, do something about it, next election! (more...)

Boycott the Handlery Hotel
"Dustin...That would be much appreciated if you could post information about the contract fight at the Handlery on your website and to your members. Many people use the Handlery because it is a union shop, however management has refused to negotiate a fair contract. I have attached a document to this email that contains all of the necessary information about the dispute. The customer support and solidarity is critical in sending a strong message to the hotel that they must treat their employees with the respect they deserve. Thanks again for your help" (more...)

SEIU/Kaiser Permanente Layoff Agreement
"Many Kaiser workers in California have already received pink slips. But SEIU-UHW Trustee Dave Regan has promised members that there will be no layoffs. At the same time, hes asking workers to picket Kaiser to protest the Layoff Agreement - the very agreeement that SEIU has already agreed to. Kaiser management has verified that SEIU and Kaiser have been secretly bargaining over job eliminations - undermining the previous Employment and Income Security agreements won by NUHW leaders". SEIU Opposes Lay-Offs @ Kaiser
"We don't think it's necessary to eliminate any positions, given Kaiser's strong financial performance this year. • The SEIU won the SEIU/NUHW election of HomeCare Workers, last week....or did it?

  • After many years of battling, Security Workers working at Kaiser Permanente facilities within San Diego now have a Union with SEIU, Local 24/7. OPEIUVoice has long supported these Workers in their effort to unionize; over the past years, OPEIUVoice communicated often with the Security Workers and SEIU. I, Dustin Teske, from OPEIUVoice, personally traveled to each Kaiser Permanete facility, during the day and evening, in order to provide the Security Workers with information as well as their Union authorization cards. Interest levels of the Security Workers was very high and I received authorization cards from over 55 Security Workers (greater than 90% of the workforce).
    Congratulations Security Workers!
